Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why are you running for City Council?

A:
I grew up in East County and I have wonderful memories of my childhood. As my children grow up, I hope that El Cajon will be the place they want to settle and raise my grandchildren. I want to work hard now to ensure that El Cajon will be a wonderful community for my family to work in and live in. I care about the future of El Cajon.

Q. What are the 5 most important issues facing El Cajon?

A:
The key issues I have identified in El Cajon are as follows:

  • Safety: people need to feel safe in their homes
  • Quality Redevelopment: high quality development which is compatible with surrounding areas
  • Quality, affordable housing: reducing unnecessary obstacles to creating affordable, quality neighborhoods
  • Attract quality jobs to El Cajon
  • Support well trained and well-equipped Fire and Police services

Q. What are your qualifications to serve on City Council?

A. I have experience, I have a track record and I have expertise in the field of Real Estate, Development and Land Use.

Experience: I was elected to the City Council in March of 2002 and after only 3 months my fellow Councilmembers voted to make me the Mayor Pro-Tem. Before that, I served four years as an elected official to the Grossmont-
Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board and I served four years on the El Cajon Planning Commission.

Track Record: Since I've been on the City Council, we have accomplished many things. Downtown redevelopment projects have been blooming. There are many new restaurants opening and about $100 million worth of investment. The City has a new budget which requires no new taxes, but maintains a high level of Public Safety Services. I have worked hard to create an atmosphere of peace and prosperity at City Hall. The East County Californian called me the City's Chief Peacemaker! (click here to read the article) Under my leadership at GCCCD, we hadthe best budget in decades, we secured more state funding for new construction at Grossmont College than in the last 25 years combined, and we created an atmosphere of goodwill, developing a good working relationship between the faculty and the administration.

Expertise: I hold a Master’s Degree in Real Estate and I have 18 years experience as a Real Estate Appraiser. I have testified as an expert witness in over 100 Real Estate valuation cases. I understand the economics of real estate investment, development and property values. As a homeowner, I understand and respect the need to maintain property values through quality construction and development. As an investor, I understand the rights of private property owners.

Q. How would you describe your leadership qualities?

A. I believe in government which is friendly and responsive to the average citizen. I believe that input should be welcomed and considered. I can create an environment which is friendly and approachable. I brought unity to the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board and I am doing it in El Cajon. (click here to read what the Californian reported) I believe in being accessible to the people I represent, which is why I give out my home phone number: 442-6563. I want people to know that they can reach me with their questions and suggestions. I am holding "open office hours" at City Hall every Tuesday from 8:30 - 11:30 am. I want to meet with people and give them a voice for their concerns.

Q. What message would you like the voters to get from you?

A. I want people to understand that prosperity comes with unity and productivity. Let’s work together to find solutions and then get busy. We have seen progress downtown, but we need more investment dollars to get the job done. My motto is "Let’s find a way to make it work". By working together we are able to accomplish the goal almost 100% of the time. Now our City Council is productive and El Cajon is beginning to prosper! Let's keep that ball rolling! I would appreciate your vote on November 5th!
